Summer 2009 Practice Groups and Practice Dates/Times
Group 1: Introduction to Swimming
Description: This program is designed to be an instructional and
exercise program that develops health, fitness and swimming skills (for
children.) Instruction consists of the fundamentals of swimming,
and introduction to the competitive swim strokes. Students will
increase endurance and strength in an enjoyable and confidence building
environment. Classes will be held 4 days a week for 40 minutes,
with 8-10 swimmers per coach/instructor. Swimmers will be placed
into one of two instruction groups based on age, ability and skill
level. This group is designed for individuals with no prior swim
team experience.

• To participate in this group, swimmers should
be able to complete the following:
o 10 yds of forward locomotion unassisted
o float on their stomach, unassisted, with face in
the water for at least 5 seconds
o float on their back, unassisted, for at least 5
seconds
o enter shallow water (up to their chin) unassisted
o exit shallow water unassisted
o feel comfortable underwater
o feel comfortable exploring deep water (over their
head)
• with assistance if necessary
Group 2: Stroke Development
Description: This program is designed to concentrate on
developing the skills of competitive swimming while improving endurance
and stamina. Participants will compete with other area programs
in swim meets including dual, tri and selected invitational swim
meets. Practice groups will meet 5 days per week and will be
designed for athletes based on age and ability/skill level. This
group is recommended for swimmers who have been involved in a swim team
program before, or have completed at least 2 summers of formal swim
instruction

be able to complete the following:
o 25 yds of freestyle
o 25 yds of backstroke
o enter deepwater (over their head) unassisted
o exit deepwater unassisted
• Attendance at dual meets is recommended and
strongly encouraged
• Attendance at weekend meets is encouraged, but
not required
Group 3: Pre-Competitive
Description: This program is designed to introduce athletes and
their families to competitive swimming as a sport. This program
introduces the skills necessary for competitive swimming, including
training in all four competitive strokes, starts, turns and
finishes. Development of good training practices will be
introduced, focusing on: understanding the set, clock management, lane
etiquette, and cooperative training.

• To participate in this group, swimmers should
be able to complete the following:
o up to 100 yds of freestyle,
o up to 50 yds back and breast
o up to 25yds of fly
o perform a forward start (dive) from the edge of
pool into deep water
• Regular practice attendance is recommended
• Attendance at scheduled swim meets is expected
• Attendance at NVAL Championships is strongly
encouraged
• Parents will be expected to volunteer a
minimum of 2 hours per day, as “timers” at meets their
children participate in. (More info will be made available
as meet days approach)
Group 4: Competitive.
Description: This program is designed to help those athletes and
their families who choose to make the necessary commitment to reach
their full potential and personal goals. This program includes
year round athletes, as well as summer athletes who are willing to make
the commitment to the competitive program.

• Swimmers will be expected to swim the
following repeat distances during practices:
o 200-1000yds of freestyle
o 50-200yds of backstroke and breaststroke
o 25-100yds of butterfly
o 100-400yds of I.M.
• Training guidelines:
o Regular practice attendance is expected
o Swimmers should be able to demonstrate
understanding of:
• set descriptions, intervals, and time
standards
• Attendance at scheduled swim meets is expected.
• Attendance at NVAL Championships (or other
Coach approved Championship) is expected
• Parents will be expected to volunteer a
minimum of 2 hours per day, as “timers” at meets their
children participate in. (More info will be made available
as meet days approach)
